Provenance

Found unnumbered in the New Armouries Attic, north, 13th March 1987. Ex Museum of Artillery, Rotunda, Woolwich - No.2067 in the 1873 Cat, 'French Wheeler's Axe'; Re-numbered as class XV.17 in the 1889 Cat. (reprint 1906). Apparently not among the items transfered from the Rotunda to the Tower Armouries in 1927.

Physical Description

Large axe-head, with tapering, tubular socket; generally similar in form to the so-called heading axes (XV.1, XV.2, XV.19).

Dimensions: Overall length, back of socket to blade edge: 350 mm (13.75 in)

Inscriptions and Marks

In the centre of one face, towards the socket, stamped: a flower(?); and, below: a cannon over 'MA' over '2067' (the Museum of Artillery number).
