Physical Description

The hilt is made up of a probably associated deeply grooved ' fig'-shaped pommel see notes) and modern wire -bound, wooden grip, the guard comprising horizontally curved quillons with fish-tail terminals. One side of the hilt bears a small, flat, shell pierced with two hearts and the other side a complex four-bar thumb-guard which forms so-called ' pas- d'ane' ([now calledthe arms of the hilt).
The stiff blade is of hollow-ground triangular cross-section.
