Physical Description

The pot is made in two pieces joined in a low comb and with an even brim. The main edge has a plain inward turn with a recessed border containing twenty round-headed lining rivets with square washers. Round the base of the skull are fourteen round-headed rivets, two at either side with square washers retaining fragments of the cheekpiece leathers. At the rear is a plume holder. It is black from the hammer. There is a suspension hole at the front and rear of the brim, and a pair of small suspension holes at the front. The breastplate has a low neck, a medial ridge and a point at the waist which has a wide flange. The main edges have plain inward turns bordered by single incised lines, but with recessed borders on the tassets. At either side of the chest is a swivel hook and pierced stud for the shoulder straps. Joining the tassets to the flange are four hinged hasps permanently attached, round at the top, pointed at the bottom. The tassets are of one-piece construction, embossed to simulate seven lames, and decorated with three rows of rivets ending in triangles at the bottom. The surface is black from the hammer and filed. The hinge pin of the inner right hasp is missing.
