Physical Description

With rounded shoulders, deeply shaped to the spine almost to the waist, at which there is a narrow flange with a medial cusp. The neck opening is broad and shallow, with narrow shoulders, the arm openings broad and deep. The main edges are inwardly turned and file roped, symmetrically about the centre at the neck and waist, with sunken borders at the neck and arms, edged by a ridge of rounded section and file roped. At either side is a plain iron buckle, for fastening the shoulder straps. Low at either side of the waist is a rivet for the attachment of the waist strap. At either side of the neck and at either armpit is a pierced suspension hole. It is black overall. The black paint was removed by conservation in November 1991, revealing a bright russet surface.
