Purchased from the Beriah Botfield collection at Norton Hall, Northamptonshire, with the aid of the National Art Collections Fund, 1942, (Norton Hall No. 3)

Physical Description

Slender blade, stiffening at the point and widening suddenly at the bottom where it is etched with a trophy of arms which frames a cartouche bearing the arms of Franz Lothar, Reichsgraf von Schonborn, Bishop of Bamberg, and Elector of Mainz (regn.1693-1729), the whole under a crown surmounted by a cross. At the junction of the blade and short socket there is a moulding from which spring two match holders shaped and etched to represent monsters. The heads are formed as clamps in which the match can be held. On each holder there is a short gutter shaped channel through which the match passed. Two short langets, modern haft with steel shoe.
