Physical Description

The mask is made in three parts. The face-guard is of wire mesh, of amygdaloid shape with a medial keel. The ear-protection is provided by a curved section of wire mesh starting below each ear and curving over the skull. The wire mesh is stainless steel with the interior of the face-guard being sprayed matt black to cut out 'glare flashes'.

The third part of the mask is made up of a bib for throat protection. It is attached inside, to the wire mesh above the ears by three rivets and is sewn to the mesh under the chin. Opposite each ear five holes have been drilled through the bib to improve hearing. The bib is made of a layer of cotton with a vinyl interior layer sandwiching a layer of foam. The whole bib is divided into eight sections by heat welds.

Around the circumference runs a leather-like white vinyl strip that is both glued and sewn to the wire mesh, the purpose of which is to protect the join beteen the two pieces of mesh and the bib. The rear edge of the mesh has a hard rounded plastic edging.

Around the rear of the face-guard, inside, is a wire to retain shape and to improve rigidity. Attached to the wire is a yellow plastic foam-filled tube, 1 1/2 inches thick, to provide comfort. Attached to the top of the wire support is a plastic covered wire head-clip, which is angled downwards at the rear to support the mask on the head.
