Physical Description

It has a high hemispherical skull with a narrow integral brim turned down at each side. It is made in two halves joined at the skull in a low, medial comb and at the brim with rivets. The comb, which increases in height at its apex, is turned to the left. The brim has a plain inward turn accompanied by a recessed border containing eighteen lining rivets, of which one at the front left is missing, with internal square washers, of which two at the right are missing. The base of the skull is encircled by fourteen rivets, of which two at each side have square internal washers retaining fragments of the connecting leathers for the missing cheekpieces. Low at the rear of the skull is a plume holder of plain truncated conical form attached by two rivets on lateral extensions. It is painted black overall. The front border of the brim is crudely pierced with one later suspension hole.

Inscriptions and Marks

At the left brim border is a deeply struck mark possibly that of the James II cypher.
