Physical Description

It has a high hemispherical skull with a wide integral brim turned down at each side. It is made in two halves joined at the skull in a low medial comb and at the brim with rivets. The comb, which has a plain inward turn accompanied by a recessed border containing thirty two lining rivets, of which one at the front and one at each side are missing, with internal square washers of which fourteen are missing. The base of the skull is encircled by eighteen lining rivets with internal square washers, of which at each side were also for the attachment by connecting leathers of the missing cheekpieces. It is painted black overall. The main edge is damaged at one end.

Inscriptions and Marks

At the centre of one side is a deeply struck mark, probably that of the James II cypher.
