Physical Description

It has a hemispherical skull with a narrow, integral brim, turned down at each side. It is made in two halves, joined at the skull in a low, medial comb, and at the brim with rivets. The comb, which increases in height at its apex, is turned to the right, while the brim has a plain, inward turn. The base of the skull is encircled by fourteen round headed lining rivets with square, internal washers of which two, towards the rear of each side retain fragments of the connecting leathers for the missing cheekpieces. The rear of the brim, the rear right of the brim and both sides of the skull have been dented. The front of the brim is crudely pierced with a later suspension hole.

Inscriptions and Marks

Deeply struck towards the rear of the left side of the brim with an indistinct mark, probably the crowned IR cypher of James II.
