Physical Description

It has a high, hemispherical skull, with an integral brim turned down at either side. It is made in two pieces joined in a low comb, expanding to the centre, and turned to the left, and riveted at the brim. The main edge has a plain, inward turn with a sunken border probably once containing sixteen lining rivets, with round heads and square internal washers retaining fragments of the canvas lining band; those at the front and rear are missing if they were ever fitted. The base of the skull is bordered by fourteen rivets; a pair towards the rear have square washers retaining leather fragments for the missing cheekpieces; the rest are decorative. No plume holder was fitted. It is painted black. The rear of the brim is damaged, and there is a suspension hole in the border at the middle right, with a corroded hole behind it.
