Old Tower collection; probably Tower arsenal. First accessioned by Valluation Team when found on loan to Intelligence & Security Group (Volunteers), Ashford House, Handel Street, London WC1N 1NP, Loan L53, Spring 1987.

Physical Description

General Type Description: Brass hilt comprising oval pommel on a stand and with a prominent tang-button, D-shaped knuckle-guard which spreads to form a heart-shaped stool around the blade, and very short rear quillon with drop-finial inclined towards the blade. Wire-bound grip. Single-edged, slightly curved blade, with narrow fuller towards the back extending for three-quarters of its length.

Variations, losses, damage, etc: Hole drilled through inside shell, near edge; grip lacks wire binding and probably leather covering; leather 'buff-piece' remains; hilt and blade lacquered.


Dimensions: Overall length: approx. 846 mm (33 5/16 in.), Blade length, back edge at buff-piece to tip: 692 mm (27 1/4 in.), Blade width, at hilt: mm ( in.) Weight: 725 g (1 lb 9 1/2 oz)

Inscriptions and Marks

On hilt, on knuckle-guard, on inside, struck(?): 6 lines (one faint).On blade, on outside, nar hilt, stamped: crown over 8.

The grip area was X-rayed by Dr David Starley in August 2003 (Job Code: AM 1832) to see if there was any indication of marks on the tang but nothing was found (see copy of report on inv. file for IX.373).
