Physical Description

Barrel octagonal flaring slightly at the muzzle, with an elaborate front sight and rear sight. It was originally fitted with a priming pan and flashguard. The underside is deeply stamped with a forger's mark repeated. Lock with large plate, swan-neck cock and simple incised bird's head and scrolls; no bridle. Length allows use of original three lock-screws. There was originally a small pivoted dog-catch engaging with a notch in the lower edge of the cock, now missing. The lockplate is crudely engraved with a bird and tulip-like flower. The stock is of wheelock form with a fishtail butt, the whole inlaid with engraved oval plaques of mother-of-pearl many now missing, the intervening spaces filled with conventional foliage in mother-of-pearl and brass wire. Brass bands at fore end. Scroll brass trigger guard. Lock is later about 1660.
