Physical Description

It has a two piece skull with an integral peak and a seperate neckguard. The skull is hemispherical, the pieces joined in a low comb, turned to the right and riveted at the bottom and at the peak. The lower edge of the skull at either side has a partial inward turn, and a pair of round headed rivets with square washers retaining fragments of the leathers for the missing cheekpieces. The peak is slightly turned down, rounded at either side with an obtuse medial point. Its main edge has a plain, inward turn with a recessed border. At the rear of the peak is a rectangular slot for the missing nasal, and above that is a pair of rivet holes for the missing nasal staple. Above the peak is a row of four lining rivets retaining fragments of canvas lining band. The neckguard is made in one piece, flaring to the neck with a medial point and embossed to simulate four lames. It is attached to the skull by a rivet, which also acts as a lining rivet, at either side. Its main edge has a plain inward turn with a sunken border containing nine lining rivets of the above type. It is ornamented with a row of decorative, round headed rivets running down the centre, with an upward pointing triangle of three at the base. It is painted black. There is a large dent at the left of the skull.
