Physical Description

European-style lock with a swan-necked cock, the lockplate and cock being flat faced. There are no bridles either for the frizzen or for the tumbler. The fish-tailed stock is bound in iron, with some simple engraving, all around the edge. Underneath, this band expands in the region under the lock and terminates before the forend. There is no trigger guard. The side faces of the stock are carved around all the borders with narrow mouldings, the faces being carved with palmettes and small stylised flowers. The iron side plate is provided with a swivle ring for a sling, another ring being fitted through the forend. The octagonal barrel is secured by six brass barrel bands, decorated with very coarse engraved foliage, and is sheathed in brass near the muzzle. The ramrod is missing.

Inscriptions and Marks

Stamped on the tail of the lockplate is MS,the M over another mark, and in the middle of the plate EM below a pair of wings between which is a heart(?).

Notes

The lock is possibly Italian and is very crudely finished internally, the plate still showing coarse file marks.
