Physical Description

It has a two piece skull with an integral peak and a seperate neckguard. The hemispherical skull is joined in a low medial comb turned to the left and terminating a little above its base where it is riveted at the inside rear and at the inside peak. The peak, which is of a fairly broad, rounded, obtusely pointed form, has a plain inward turned edge accompanied by a recessed border. It is pierced at its centre, near the base of the skull, with a rectangular hole through which the missing nasal bar originally passed. The nasal bar was locked by a wing headed screw inserted in a threaded hole in the front of a rectangular staple attached by a pair of rivets at the centre of the brow. The base of the skull is encircled at the front and sides only by ten round headed lining rivets with square internal washers which retain fragments of the canvas lining band. The rear two rivets at each side also retain fragments of the connecting leathers for the missing cheekpieces. The sides of the skull have stepped edges. Attached to the rear of the skull by a rivet at either side is a one piece neckguard embossed to simulate five lames. It has a plain inward turned main edge accompanied by a recessed border containing thirteen round headed lining rivets with square internal washers retaining fragments of the canvas lining band, of which the top one on each side is also that which attaches the neckguard to the skull. Each simulated lame is decorated at its upper edge with a single incised line and there is a single decorative round headed rivet at the centre of the uppermost simulated lame. It is pitted with traces of black paint overall except for the comb, the main edges of the neckguard and peak and all the rivets which show traces of gold paint (IV.1370 is similarly decorated). There is a suspension hole at the main edge of the neckguard at the centre. There is a suspension hole at the main edge of the neckguard at the centre. There is a cut in the front right of the peak.
