Physical Description

It has a two piece skull with an integral peak and a seperate neckguard. The hemispherical skull is joined in a low medial comb turned to the right and terminating a little above its base where it was originally rivetted at the inside rear, where the rivet is missing, and the inside of the peak. The peak, which is of a fairly narrow, rounded, obtusely pointed form, has a plain inward turned edge accompanied by a recessed border. It is pierced at its centre, near the base of the skull, with a rectangular hole through which the missing, sliding nasal bar originally passed. The nasal bar was locked by a wing headed screw inserted in a threaded hole at the front of a rectangular staple originally attached by a pair of rivets at the centre of the brow of which the left one has broken away. The base of the skull was originally encircled at the front and sides only by ten round headed lining rivets of which the front two also retained the staple while the rearmost one at each side have square internal washers retaining fragments of one of the connecting leathers for the missing cheekpieces. The remaining rivets are probably later and round headed on the inside. The sides of the skull have a plain inward turn. A one piece neckguard is attatched to the rear of the skull by a rivet at either side with square internal washers which also retain fragments of the other connecting leather for the missing cheekpieces. It is embossed to simulate four lames and has a plain inward turned main edge accompanied by a recessed border containing thirteen lining rivets inclusive of the articulating rivet at the top at either side. Substancial fragments of the canvas lining band are retained by square internal washers. Each simulated lame is decorated at its upper edge with a single incised line and at its centre by a rivet except for the last which is decorated with three in a triangular formation. It is painted black overall.
