Physical Description

It has a two piece skull with an integral peak and a seperate neckguard. The hemispherical skull is joined in a low, medial comb, turned to the right, and terminating a little above its base where, at the rear, it is also joined by a rivet. The peak, which is of broad, rounded, obtusely pointed form, is joined by a rivet at its centre, and has a plain, inward turned edge accompanied by a recessed border containing nine decorative, round headed rivets. It is pierced at its center, near the base of the skull, with a rectangular hole through which the missing, sliding nasal bar originally passed. The nasal bar was locked by a missing screw formerly inserted in a threaded hole in the front of a rectangular staple attached by a pair of round headed rivets at the brow. The base of the skull is encircled, at the front and the sides only, with eight round headed lining rivets with square, internal washers, of which the front two are those which also retain the staple for the nasal bar, and the rear ones at each side retain fragments of the front connecting leathers for the missing cheekpieces. The sides of the skull have inward turned lower edges. Attached to the rear edge of the skull by a round headed rivet at either side is a one piece neck guard embossed to simulate five lames. It has a plain, inward turned main edge accompanied by a recessed border containing elevcen round headed lining rivets with square, internal washers, of which the top one at each side (the right one moved to a new hole and lacking its washer) is also that which retains the neck guard and a fragment of the rear connecting leathers of the cheekpieces. Each simulated lame is decorated with an incised line at the top, and a round headed rivet at the centre and each side, except for the last one which is decorated. Attached by a pair of round headed rivets at the nape of the skull is a tapering iron plume holder pierced with three small, decorative holes. The point of the peak has been bent upwards causing it to be split there. It has a small hole rust through the left side. The right of the skull is dented, and the apex of the comb is damaged. A small hole is pierced at the point of the neckguard. Painted black.
