Bowyer Tower, AS 77 1989

Physical Description

It has a two piece skull with an integral peak and a seperate neckguard. The ovoid skull is joined medially, by nine rivets; the left half overlapping the right which is cusped at the rivets. It is decorated with ten raised ribs which terminate a little above its base, and radiate from its apex which is filled with a short, transversely pierced stud riveted through a star shaped washer with eight points. The peak, which is of a broad, rounded, obtusely pointed form, is joined by a rivet at its centre, has a plain, inward turn. It is pierced at its centre, near the base of the skull, with a rectangular hole through which the missing, sliding nasal bar originally passed. The nasal bar was locked by a wing headed screw inserted in a threaded hole in the front of a rectangular staple attatched by a pair of round headed rivets at the centre of the brow. The base of the skull is encircled, at the front and sides only, by ten round headed lining rivets with square internal washers (two washers missing on the left, and one on the right), of which the rear one at each side retains a fragment of the foremost connecting leather of the missing cheekpiece. Attatched to the rear edge of the skull, immediately behind the peak, by a round headed rivet at either side is a narrow, one piece neck guard, embossed to simulate three lames, which curves down at the sides to an obtuse, central point. It has a plain, inward turned main edge, accompanied by a recessed border containing thirteen round headed lining rivets with square internal washers, of which the top one of each side ia also that which secures the neckguard to the skull, and held the rearmost connecting leather for the missing cheekpiece. Each simulated lame is decorated with a pair of round headed rivets in the centre, and a single one at each side, except for the last one which has three rivets at the centre arranged in an inverted triangular formation. Each side is crudely pierced at its lower edge with a later suspension hole. Painted black.
