Bowyer Tower, AS 77 1989

Physical Description

It has a two piece skull with an integral peak and a seperate neckguard. The ovoid skull is joined medially by eight rivets; the right half overlapping the left. It is decorated with ten raised ribs which terminate a little above the base, and radiate from its apex which is fitted with a short, transversely pierced stud rivets through a star shaped washer with eight points. Also radiating from the apex are twelve incised lines bisecting the angles between the ribs and the medial ridge of the skull. The peak, which is of a broad, rounded, obtusely pointed form, is joined by a rivet at its centre, and has a plain, inward turn accompanied by a recessed border. It is pierced at its centre, near the base of the skull, with a rectangular hole through which the missing, sliding nasal bar originally passed. The nasal bar was locked by a missing wing headed screw inserted in a threaded hole in the front of a rectangular staple attatched by a pair of round headed rivets at the centre of the brow. The base of the skull is encircled, at the front and sides only, by ten round headed lining rivets with square, internal washers, of which the rear one at each side also retains fragments of the front connecting leathers of the missing cheekpieces. Attatched to the rear edge of the skull, immediately behind the peak, by a round headed rivet at either side, is a narrow, one piece neckguard, embossed to simulate four lames, which curves down at the side to a central point. It has a plain, inward turned main edge accompanied by a recessed border containing fifteen round headed lining rivets with square internal washers (the third from top washer missing on the left side), of which the top one at each side is also that which secures the neckguard to the skull, and held the rearmost connecting leather for the cheekpiece. Each simulated lame is decorated with a pair of rivets at its centre, and a single one at either side. The peak is split at its centre, and the point of the neckguard is pierced with a small suspension hole. Painted black.
