Bowyer Tower, AS 77 1989

Physical Description

It has a hemispherical skull with an integral peak and a seperate neckguard. The ovoid skull is joined medially by six rivets; the right half overlapping the left. It is decorated with ten raised ribs which terminate well above the base, and radiate from its apex which is fitted with a sort, transversely pointed stud riveted from the apex are twelve incised lines bisecting the angles between the ribs and the medial ridge of the skull. A further incised line runs around the brow of the skull, just above its lining rivets. The peak, which is of narrow, rounded, obtusely pointed form, is joined by a rivet at the centre, and has a plain inward turn avccompanied by a recessed border. It is pierced at its centre, near the base of the skull, with a rectangular hole through which the missing, sliding nasal bar originally passed. The nasal bar was locked by a missing screw and staple which was presumably held by the two central lining rivets at the brow. The base of the skull is encircled at the front and sides only, by twelve round headed lining rivets with square internal washers (two of the latter missing on the left side), of which the rear one at each side also retains a fragment of the front connecting leather for the missing cheekpiece. Attatched to rear edge of the skull by a round headed rivet situated imnmediately beneath each of the latter, and immediately behind the peak, is a one piece neckguard, embossed to simulate three lames, which curves down at the sides to an obtuse, central point. It has a plain, inward turn, accompanied by a recessed border containing eleven round headed lining rivets with a square, internal washers of which the upper opne at each side is also that which secures the neckguard to the skull. Each simulated lame is decorated with an incised line at its upper edge, and also a pair of rivets at its centre and a single one at either side, except for the last one which has three rivets in inverted triangular formation at its centre. The point of the neckguard is pierced with a later suspension hole. Painted black.
