Object Number

Tower arsenal. Accessioned from Bowyer Tower AS 72 (1988).

Physical Description

It has a high, hemispherical skull with a narrow, integral brim turned down at each side. It is made in two halves, joined at the skull in a low, medial comb, and at the brim with rivets. The comb increases slightly in height at its apex, is turned to the right, while the brim has a plain, inward turn, accompanied by a recessed border originally containing fourteen round headed lining rivets with square internal washers retaining substantial fragments of the lining band. The front rivet on the right side is missing, while the second and third rivets from the front on the left side lack their washers. The base of the skull is encircled by fourteen round headed rivets of which two on each side have square internal washers retaining fragments of the connecting leathers for the missing cheekpieces. Attached by a pair of rivets at the nape is a decoratively shaped, iron plume holder. The left side of the skull has two dents. The front of the brim is damaged. It has been crudely pierced at each side and at the rear with later suspension holes. Painted black.
