Physical Description

It is of roughly hemispherical form and of thin iron. It is made in two pieces brazed together around the crown and from the crown to the nape. The lower edge is plain and bordered by forty two lining holes and a rectangular slot at the front. It is bright on the outside and painted black inside.

The brazed seam at the rear is cut in dovetails; There is some evidence that the edges of the crown seam are also cut in dovetails. These dovetails may actually be retangular tabs overlapping a straight edge and filed down after brazing.
