Object Number

Bowyer Tower AS 73 (1988)

Physical Description

It has a high, hemispherical skull with a narrow integral brim turned down slightly at either side. It is made in two pieces joined in a low comb turned to the left and expanding to the centre, and riveted at the brim. The main edge has a plain, inward turn containing seventeen round headed lining rivets, all but one with square internal washers. The base of the skull is encircled by sixteen rivets, of which a pair at either side had square washers and fragments of leathers for the missing cheekpieces; one of these is missing at the left. At the rear of the skull is a plume holder, plain with a high point and a pierced and pointed arm at either side, broken off at the left, for rivets to the skull. It is painted black. There is a long, much riveted repair in the right of the brim, another square patch at the front of the brim, and another double repair at the middle left of the brim, and lower skull, where part of the wire within the turn is exposed. At the rear is a suspension hole in a buckled section of the brim. At the front left is a damaged section edge with a suspension hole nearby. The turn of the comb is much cracked; there is a rivet near the apex.
