Physical Description

It has a high, hemeispherical skull with a narrow integral brim dipping down at either side. It is made in two pieces joined in a low comb, extending to the centre and turned to the right, and riveted at the brim. The main edge has a plain, inward turn with a sunken border containing sixteen round headed lining rivets with squarish internal washers. The base of the skull is encircled by fourteen rivets, of which a pair at either side, towards the rear, had square washers and leathers for the missing cheekpieces; only one washer and leather survives at either side. The remainder are decorative. No plume holder was fitted. It is painted black. The edge at the rear of the brim is buckled up. A suspension hole is pierced at either side of the brim, at the front of which is a large jagged expanded crack.
