Object Number

Bowyer Tower AS 72 (1988)

Physical Description

It has a high, hemispherical skull with a narrow integral brim turned down at each side. It is made in two halves, joined at the skull in a low, medial comb, and at the brim with rivets. The comb, which increases in height at its apex, is turned to the left, while the brim has a plain, inward turn, accompanied by a recessed border originally containing twenty lining rivets with square internal washers retaining fragments of the lining band. Of these the rearmost, the third from rear on the right and the fourth from rear on the left are missing, while the second from rear at the left lacks its washer. The base of the skull was originally encircled by fourteen round headed rivets of which the third from the rear is missing on both sides, and two on each side originally held the missing cheekpieces under square, internal washers of which the rearmost on the left survives. The nape is pierced with a pair of rivet holes for the attachment of the missing plume holder. Crudely pierced with a large suspension hole at the front, left of the brim, and with a smaller one at its rear left. Split at the front of the brim and skull, and badly corroded at the left of the brim. Painted black.
