Physical Description

It has a low hemispherical skull with an integral brim turned down at either side. It is made in two pieces joined in a low comb, expanding very slightly to the centre and turned to the right, and riveted at the brim. The main edge has a plain, inward turn, with a sunken border once containing sixteen lining rivets with quadrangular internal washers, of which the centre front one is missing, its hole expanded into a large, cracked, jagged suspension hole. One washer at the left is missing. The base of the skull was bordered by fourteen rivets, two of which at the centre and just behind it at the left have square washers and retain leather fragments for the missing cheekpiece. One rivet at the right is similar, but the other is missing. The rest are decorative. A tall, flaring plume holder is attached by a rivet in an obtusely pointed arm at either side, at the rear of the skull. It is painted black. At the front of the brim, at the base of the skull, is a pair of pierced holes. Part of the turn there is detached. The rear of the brim is damaged.
