Old Tower collection; probably Tower arsenal. First accessioned by the Valuation Team when found on loan to Intelligence & Security Group (Volunteers), Ashford House, Handel Street, London WC1P 1NP (Loan L53), Spring 1987.

Physical Description

General Type Description: Brass hilt comprising oval pommel on a stand and with a prominent tang-button, D-shaped knuckle-guard which spreads to form a heart-shaped stool around the blade, and very short rear quillon with drop-finial inclined towards the blade. Wire-bound grip. Single-edged, slightly curved blade, with narrow fuller towards the back extending for three-quarters of its length.
Variations, losses, damage, etc: rear quillon borken off; hole drilled through outside shell, near edge; grip wire lacking, leather covering remains; blade has ricasso; extreme blade tip slightly rounded off; hilt and blade lacquered.


Dimensions: Overall length: approx. 856 mm (33 11/16 in.), Blade length, back edge by hilt to tip: 702 mm (27 5/8 in.), Blade width, at hilt: 32 mm (1.26 or approx. 1 5/16 in.) Weight: 745 g (1 lb 10 oz)

On blade, on outside, near hilt, stamped: crown over 19.On blade, on inside, near hilt, stamped: broad arrow over [B] O (BO); overstamped: HADLEY (the H (not fully visible) and A conjoined); [HAD]LEY struck again just above.
