Tower arsenal. Accessioned from Bowyer Tower AS 54 (1989).

Physical Description

It is narrow, with a slight medial ridge. It is formed of seven upward overlapping lames, widening towards the lower edge and with a slight cutaway slightly at the crotch. The upper lame has a small step at it's inner edge The upper and lower edges have roped inward turns, the side edges plain partial turns, with recessed borders at the side and lower edges. The subsidiary edges are bordered by single incised lines, with a V-shaped nick at its centre and at either side of the articulatory rivets along its inner and outer edges. The lames are articulated by round-headed sliding rivets at the inside. The single column of large-headed flush rivets of the central leather have flat, circular heads and are hidden under the overlaps of the lames. The single column of rivets at the inside now pass through construction holes formerly occupied by dummy rivets, thereby securing the lames to one another rigidly. Five round headed lining rivets border the lower edge. There is a rivet at the inner and outer edges of each lame, except for the inner first and the outer fourth which are missing. There are three rivet-holes in the first lame for the attachment of the missing buckles. At either end of the first lame's upper edge is a crudely pierced suspension hole. Bright.
