Tower arsenal. Accessioned from Bowyer Tower, A.S. 54 (1989).

Physical Description

It widens towards the bottom, has a medial ridge, formed of ten upward overlapping lames, and cut away slightly at the crotch. The lower edge has a continuously roped inward turn with a recessed border, the side and upper edges partial turns, the upper one lightly roped. The subsidiary edges are bordered by single incised lines. The lames are articulated at the outside by a column of round headed rivets, one with a circular washer. At the inside and centre were internal leathers, each attached by a single column of flush rivets, the centre one having a flush rivet and a decorative round-headed, brass-capped rivet at the base, the inside one having a single flush rivet at the base, and terminating at lame two. The line of this leather is decorated with a column of brass capped round headed rivets in the construction holes, the upper one riveting lames one and two solidly. The side edges are bordered by flush lining rivets on lames one, four and seven on the outside, and one, five and eight on the inside. The lower lame was bordered by nine lining rivets, the centre one of which is missing. The upper lame has a row of three rivet holes, for the missing buckles; the outer one is empty, the middle contains a flush rivet, and the inner a rivet retaining a fragment of leather strap. The lames are fastened together by a column of rather nasty rivets between the leathers. The upper lame has a pierced, suspension hole at either side of the centre. It is covered in thick plastic paint, and russet beneath.
