Probably Tower Arsenal. First accessioned when found on loan to Intelligence & Security Group (Volunteers) (Loan L53), Spring 1987.

Physical Description

General Type Description: Brass cruciform hilt of 'Roman' form with flattened, oval-sectioned pommel, swollen ribbed grip, and quillons with disc terminals decorated with incised concentric circles. Straight, single-edged blade of wedge section, with a short ricasso, tapering slightly and terminating in a double-edged spear point.


Variations, losses, damage, etc: lacquered; very extreme blade tip blunted.

Dimensions: Overall length: approx. 714 mm (28 1/8 in.), Blade length: 571 mm (22 1/2 in.) Weight: 985 g (2 lb 2 1/2 oz)

Inscriptions and Marks

On blade, on inside, on ricasso, stamped: crown over 19 (an inspection mark).On blade, on outside, on ricasso, stamped: a crested helmet (incompletely struck so only left half is visible) (the mark of Kirschbaum of Solingen).
