Physical Description

Of deep bellied form with a medial keel, with a lower breastplate lame and a waist lame. The former is shaped to fit and overlap the base of the breastplate. The neck is broad and deep and inwardly turned with symmetrical heavy file roping; it has a sunken border which dips down to form a medial point. The shoulders are very narrow and the arm openings are broad and deep; the missing gussets were each articulated by two rivets. The lower breastplate lame is cusped at either side and at the centre, and continues the medial keel. It is articulated by a single rivet at either side with a square internal washer. At its lower edge is a narrow flange for the waist lame, which is rounded, narrowing at its upper edge by a single incised line. It is articulated by three rivets, two modern, one at the right old, to the lower breastplate lame. Each tasset is attached by three modern buckles. The right tasset is composed of six lames, articulated by sliding rivets on the outside, rivets at the inside, and formerly leathered at the centre. The lower edge is inwardly turned and chisel roped with a sunken border. The side edges have partially inward turns, and the subsidiary edges are bordered by single incised lines. The articulating rivets retain traces of brass caps. The side edges are bordered with lining rivets. The left tasset is composed of seven lames, articulated like the right, but with one extra row of rivets for internal leathers. The lower edge is inwardly turned and file roped, with a sunken border, and the side and upper edges have partial inward turns, the side edges are bordered by single incised lines and are cusped at the centre and either side of the articulation points. The gussets are missing. The left tasset is associated, the right tasset and waist lame belong, perhaps together and are associated with the breastplate. The breastplate is pierced at either shoulder and arm, and the lower lame has a central hole. The tassets have been mounted at least once.
