Physical Description

Made in one piece and embossed to simulate six lames. The lower and side edges have plain inward turns with recessed borders containing eighteen round-headed brass rivets , of which all the side ones, and those at either side and the centre of the lower edge are lining rivets with circular washers; the other four may have had washers. The upper inside corner is cropped to aid the overlap. The upper edges of the embossed lames are bordered by double, incised lines. The tasset is decorated with three columns of round-headed brass decorative rivets, each column terminating in an upward pointed triangle of three at the base. Two hinged hasps, not a pair, are fitted close together at the centre. Each lower section has a cusped, onion-shaped finial, that towards the inside far more shapely, with five brass rivets of which the pair at the top an done at the bottom are used to attach the hasp to the tasset. Each hinged upper section is L-shaped, with a large, rectangular slot for the stud on the breastplate, the upper and inside edges recessed and bevelled, and a simple D-shaped branch towards the outside on which a plain, small swivel hook was mounted; that on the inner hasp being absent, though both copper rivets survive. It is covered in black paint.
