Tower arsenal. Accessioned from Bowyer Tower AS 60 (1989).

Physical Description

It is narrow, formed of seven lames overlapping upwards, with a deep lame at the bottom. The lower edge has a roped inward turn with a recessed border, and the sides have plain partial turns with very narrow recessed borders. The upper edge of each lame is cut with a scallop at the articulation point at either side. The lames are articulated by round-headed sliding rivets, mostly with circular washers, at the outside, by a modern internal leather at the centre and formerly at the inside, where they are now riveted solid. The single column of rivets of the central leather are flush, and are hidden by the overlaps of the lames: it terminates on a pair of rivets at the base. The inner column was double but terminating on one rivet at the base; the inner rivets of the leather were replaced by articulating rivets, the outer ones left empty. An additional series of rivet holes, the outer ones left empty. An additional series of rivet holes at the centre of each lame, and aligned with the latter, have been filled. The inner column has two additional round headed rivets at lames three and five. Six round-headed rivets are found in the lower border of the lowest lame, and one at either side of each lame. There is an additional rivet hole at the outside4 of lame three. The upper lame is fitted with three buckles with figure-of-8 loops of iron, with very nasty hasps. The present first lame was probably surmounted by another lame, and it is riddled with numerous filled rivet holes. There are internal repairs at the inside lower edge of lame two, the same position on lame five, the inside upper edge and outside edge of lame six. The latter two have unnecessary holes at the centres of their upper edges. The exterior is bright.
