Physical Description

It is narrow, formed of seven lames overlapping upwards. The lower edge has a roped with a recessed border, and the side edges have plain partial turns. The upper edge of each lame is bordered with an incised line, and cut with a scallop at either articulation point. The lames are articulated by sliding rivets with almost conical heads and a variety of washers at the outside, and once by internal leathers, each on a single column of rivets, at the centre and inside. The holes for the central rivets have been extended through the overlapping lames, and the lames riveted solidly. The flush rivets of the inner column survive, except for the upper one. Each column terminated on a single round head rivet with an internal washer. The lower border contains six original flush lining rivets, with a quantity of original leather at the left. Alternate lames have a flush lining rivet at either side; at the right, lames one, three, five and seven; and at the left two (now missing), four, six and seven; and at the left two (now missing), four, six and seven. Those at either side of lame seven probably retained a strap and buckle. The upper lame has three rivet holes across its upper edge for attachment of the missing lames above, with an extra hole near the inside one. The exterior is patinated russet , and covered with black paint.
