Object Number

Found in the Oriental Gallery 1992.

Physical Description

The blade is double edged and tapering, with two wider fullers running down either side of the centre line with a narrow fuller on each outer side. The inner wide fullers show evidence of watering, as does a small patch of blade near the grip on one side. On the outer face the blade is decorated with foliage in gold overlay. The hilt differs from the norm in having a one piece ivory hilt with silver and niello rivets. The scabbard is of wood with the outer face covered in red velvet and the back covered in brown leather. The chape and locket are of silver decorated with niello.

Dimensions: The length of the blade is 375 mm, the overall length of the dagger being 480 mm, the length of the scabbard being 360 mm. Weight: The weight of the dagger is 0.35 kg, that of the scabbard being 0.1 kg.

Inscriptions and Marks

The locket bears the makers mark of A.K in a rectangle with other, obscured, silver marks. A.K appears to be the mark of Andreas Kotro working around 1798 - 1831. Another trefoil shaped mark with an M in the upper right lobe might be that for PSKOV.
