Physical Description

LSW (Light Support Weapon) / MG (Machine Gun) configuration with heavy barrel and bipod. Part of what Raw calls the ‘0 series’, preproduction examples of the XL60 series. These were produced from 1975 to 1976 and represent the second evolutionary step toward SA80. The improvements included, revised reinforced receiver architecture, ‘rock in’ magazines with an L-shaped catch relocated to the left side, intended to be operated by the off-hand thumb, three round burst feature deleted, selector switch replaced with a rotary design marked ‘R’ and ‘A’, similar to the SA80 design, existing annular ring on flash suppressor modified for actual grenade launching, rear sling loop on top of the receiver, properly moulded and textured polymer furniture including a cheekpiece glued onto the upper receiver, provision for emergency iron sights; a folding front and a removable rear (the former being kept folded when not in use and the latter stored in a new compartment in the grip). A bolt hold-open device has been incorporated in the form of a simple steel bar, pivoting at the rear and under spring tension, the front of which is activated by the magazine follower when the magazine is empty (thus holding the working parts to the rear). Part of the bar protrudes through a slot on the underside of the Trigger Mechanism Housing, allowing the user to push up on this to manually engage the hold-open device.

The Light Support Weapon/Machine Gun variant also features a new cylindrical pattern of flash suppressor and optional 30 round magazines. An LSW-specific trigger mechanism is fitted to permit firing from an open bolt when set to Automatic (thereby enhancing air cooling of the barrel and working parts), but from the conventional closed bolt position when set to Repetition.
