Physical Description

A presentation pair of Colt model 1861 Navy revolvers in a fitted brass bound mahogany case lined with red velvet. The back strap bears the inscription: "To Mark Firth Esq. from President Colt's PFM Co". Mark Firth was the son of Thomas Firth, founder of Thomas Firth and Sons, Steelmakers, Sheffield, and who supplied Colt with steel. The revolvers have a higher degree of finish than the standard commercial models and have small enhancing features such as the use of selected timber for the grip and knurling applied to the loading lever. The cylinder scene, depicting a naval battle, usually rolled onto the cylinder by a specialised machine, is here hand-engraved. The barrel and cylinder are rust-blued to a mirror finish. The pistols appear to be in unfired condition. A feature which always points to either limited use or great care of revolvers such as this is the retention of the safety pins set between the nipples at the rear of the cylinder and used to engage with a small notch in the hammer nose, allowing it to rest between two loaded and capped chambers and be readyfor immediate use. The case contains the usual accessories comprising: bullet/ball mould; nipple keys; spare cylinder (probably had two originally); powder flask; chamois leather pouch of caps; original wooden container for 6 skin/paper cartridges (unloaded at some time in the past and only the bullets now remain)
