Physical Description

Octagonal barrel inscribed with the date 1623 and the name of the maker AUGUSTINUS KOTTER. Lock engraved with a hunting scene, the flat wheel-cover being pierced and engraved with a design of flowers. The inner side of the lockplate is stamped with maker’s and Nuremberg control marks. Stock of pale, golden coloured wood, possibly maple, with check-butt in the German fashion, the whole inlaid with oval plaques of mother-of-pearl framed in strapwork executed in horn and ebony, the cheekpiece being inlaid with a demi-eagle displayed. The initials H.G.H together with the date 1636 are stamped by the breech-strap, with the letter N nearby.
