Physical Description

The lockplate measures 7 in x 1.25 in and is slightly rounded with teat at rear, engraved ahead of the cock, E. BAKER. The alterations from standard include a rounded ring-neck cock with the neck thicker in cross-section, a large jaw screw for better grip, and a steel having a slightly turned-back tip in the manner of the French Model 1777. The cock still stands higher than the steel.
Stocked to 4.5 in of the muzzle, the barrel retained by three pins and the upper sling loop screw. In its furniture and construction this is a typical Short Land Musket, except for the changes in the lock and the method of mounting a bayonet and in having a rod retaining spring fixed inside the tailpipe.
The bayonet blade is 17 in long. The socket is replaced by a plate curved to fit the side of the barrel, with a notch at the rear and a rectangular hole near the front of the 3.5 in plate. Above this hole is a small plate with a hole in it, through which operates a stud on the front end of a flate spring which is screwed to the shank of the blade. This spring is bent downwards to form a thumbpiece at the front. The bayonet is fixed by hooking the notch at the rear into an L-shaped bar braised to the right side of the barrel and passing through the rectangular hole and the stud on the spring dropping into the hole in the barrel stud
