Physical Description

General Type Description: Brass cruciform hilt of 'Roman' form with flattened, oval-sectioned pommel, swollen ribbed grip, and quillons with disc terminals decorated with incised concentric circles. Straight, single-edged blade of wedge section, with a short ricasso, tapering slightly and terminating in a double-edged spear point.


Variations, losses, damage, etc: hole drilled in one quillon finial. Blade edge damaged approx. 150 mm from tip; blade generally shows extensive signs of sharpening; extreme blade tip missing.

Inscriptions and Marks

On the outside of the cross-guard, in the centre, stamped: 'C'.On underside of cross-guard, stamped: 'C' or 'O'.On blade, on inside (CHECK), on ricasso, stamped: crown over ? (at 22/09/1993, legible only as crown over '1' or 'I' (with space for second digit)).On outside of blade: no visible marks.
