Notes

Secrets were used throughout the 17th and 18th centuries as a convenient form of basic head protection. They could either be worn inside or over the crown of a felt hat in order to provide some protection against sword cuts. This secret is one of a large number of almost identical form which are believed to date to the late 17th century. The function of the slot is not clear.
