Physical Description

Broad, leaf-shaped hollow blade. [Part description only in IBE. This description is taken partly from IBE for VII.5 to which this example is stated to be similar] Hollow blade has a short socket which extends into the head and is continued to the reinforced point as a medial rib. Traces of gilding remain. Socket attached to haft by 2 rivets. The mark (see below) appears above an etched (or engraved?) panel of a Tudor rose set between parallel lines and surmounted by an engrailed band. Haft shows traces of leather and fabric binding; it is possibly original.

Dimensions: Length of head: 457 mm (18 in.)

Inscriptions and Marks

On blade, stamped: 8-toothed cog-wheel.
