Object Number

Bowyer Tower, AS 37 (1989)

Physical Description

It has a high, one piece, almond shaped skull with an integral brim, swept down at the sides and rising to a point at the front and rear. The edge of the brim has file-roped inward turn accompanied by a narrow recessed border. The base of the skull is encircled by fourteen holes, for the missing lining rivets and their washers, of which two at the rear are also for the attatchment of the missing plume holder. The cheek-pieces are both missing. The skull is decorated by eight vertical bands of etched trophies on a stippled and blackened ground, each enclosed by narrow blackened bands. Each of the intervening panels are decorated above and below by a stylised foliage design in the form of an attenuated rosette. The base of the skull is encircled by a narrow etched band of guilloche enclosed by a single incised and blackened line. The brim and the apex of the skull are decorated by stylised acanthus leaves. It is painted black inside. The main edge of the brim is broken away at the front and rear where the wire over which the main edge was turned, is visible. There is a large, crudely punched hole at the centre of the rear of the brim, probably for suspension.
