Notes

The same Maltese cross mark is found on blade ricasso of the following rapiers in the Royal Armouries: IX.111, 636, 637 and 1099. The same mark also occurs on swords in the armoury of the Knights of St John in the Palace Armoury Museum, Valletta. IX.3398 has a different version of the Maltese cross on the ricasso and IX.3398 has Maltese crosses included in the blade decoration. For illustrartions and further notes see inv. file. A.R. Dufty and A. Borg, 'European Swords and Daggers in the Tower of London', London, 1974, p. 11 suggests that these rapiers formed part of the consigment of arms and armour which came to the Tower from the old armoury of the Knights of malta in 1826.
