Physical Description

The steel hilt, of 'swept-hilt' form, consisting of a flattened barrel-shaped pommel (Norman 32) with missing tang button, knuckle- bow which branches near its centre to form two counter- guards, an ecusson, vertically counter-curved quillons swelling towards their terminals, 'pas d'ane' (now called arms of the hilt), loops and two side rings. The long, tapering, blade is of flattened diamond cross-section, with a long ricasso and two fullers on each face. An unidentified mark is stamped on each face of the ricasso. Within the two fullers, on both faces of the blade, is the inscription: ‘FEDRICO PICININO'.
