Physical Description

Of short waisted form, with cut-out at the neck, narrow shoulders, a medial ridge and a deep flange at the waist. The edges of the neck and arm openings and sides of the waist flange have plain inward turns. The neck and arm openings are bordered by single incised line decoration, within which, at the centre of the neck-opening, is a domed skeuomorphic rivet. At either side of the chest is a plain swivel-hook fitted with an internal square washer, which engages a pierced stud to the outside of it that originally held the shoulder straps from the backplate. The edges under each armpit and decorated with two domed skeuomorphic rivets. The sides of the waist flange have recessed borders, within which are three skeuomorphic domed rivets. There are three additional vertical bands, each of three similar rivets, on each half of the flange and a further rivet on the flange either side of the peascod point. Set between each band of rivets is a square stud with internal square washer, the stud pierced for the hook of the top hasp of one of the two hinges that attach each tasset to the flange.
Each upper hasp is slightly drawn up at the upper edge, with ornamental corner points, the outer top corner drawn out to accomodate the hook, and the main area pierced with a rectangular slot for the flange stud. The lower hasp starts with parallel sides but tapers half way down to terminate in a trefoil, the lowest lobe with teardrop terminal. It it secured by a domed rivet, with internal square washer, on the upper end, which with three skeuomorphic rivets forms a diamond pattern, and by afurther rivet and washer on the lowest lobe, with an additional skeuomorphic rivet on the two other lobes.
It is externally bright and internally rough from the hammer. The lower right edge of the flange has split slightly, as has its right side edge where it meets the main plate. A later suspension hole has been pierced at each side under the arm-hole. The flange has a small hole pierced through it under the outermost left tasset stud.
