Provenance

Part of the Seymour Collection acquired April 1987. At least some of the items apparently acquired from Wilkinsons (sword manufacturers). For further details see entry for IX.3154, under Notes.

Physical Description

Broad, curved, steel blade; single-edged for most of its length. The rectangular-sectioned tapering tang slopes down from the line of the blade.


Condition: unpolished, with slight surface rusting.

Inscriptions and Marks

On one side, near tha base. lightly etched and now very worn: the Royal Arms / 'By Appointment' / 'Wilkinson' in a lozenge / two further lines, mostly illegible, probably including 'Made in England'.

Notes

Generally similar to IX.3159 but lacking a fuller. The form of this blade might suggest an earlier date but form and style of the Wilkinson name suggests it is later.
