Physical Description

The Dutch pot is made in two pieces joined in a low comb and with a narrow brim. The main edge has a plain inward turn with a recessed border containing fourteen round-headed lining rivets with square washers. Round the base of the skull are fourteen rivets of which two at either side have square washers for the cheekpiece leathers, the rest being decorative. At the rear is a plain plume holder. The English breastplate has a low neck, a medial ridge and a point at the waist which has a wide flange. The main edges have plain inward turns bordered by single incised lines, which form a point at the centre, but with recessed borders on the flange sides and tassets. At either side of the chest is a swivel hook and pierced stud for the shoulder straps. On the flange are four pierced studs for the tassets. The tassets are of one-piece construction, embossed to simulate seven lames, and decorated with three rows of rivets ending in chevrons at the bottoms. The tassets are fitted with L-shaped hinged hasps with swivel hooks. The surface is bright. The backplate is for a harquebusier, made 1649-54. It has a raised neck and a narrow flange at the waist. The main edges including the flange have plain inward turns. At either shoulder is a restored pikeman's shoulder strap and two additional rivet holes at the right, and three at the left. At either side is a restored waist strap.
