Provenance

Taken into guardianship from Farleigh-Hungerford Castle. Formerly on Loan L22 there.

Physical Description

The blade is curved, flat sided and coming to an angled point. The hilt is made of black horn bound to the tang with brass wire wrapped around at the top and close to the shoulder. The pommel is of a birds head design. The cusped ridge of the pommel is decorated with brass pin heads covering iron rivets. The quillons are missing. Identified with concentric corrosion, February 2005.

Inscriptions and Marks

An illegible mark near the hilt on one side of the blade.

The rivets formerly holding the horn scales in position have rusted badly causing the scales to become detached from the tang.
