For the Norman pommel type, see A.V.B. Norman and C.M. Barne, 'The Rapier and Small-Sword, 1460-1820', London etc., 1980, p. 255.
This pommel lacks a stand or button. The Typed Inventory described it as from a hand-and-a-half sword. It might possibly be from a rapier, though it seems quite heavy (PJL, 19/08/03).
The audit status was changed from Duplicate to Audited because no duplicate record or object could be found. The inv. number may have been confused with IX.735. For further details, see e-mail from PJL to DB, 13/09/02 - copy to be filed on inv. file. (PJL, 16/09/02).
